Dartmoor, New Horizons

Dartmoor - almost savannah-like in summer and with few landmarks - offers little to attract the artist's eye and is generally avoided unless a straggle of ponies or sheep provide some interest. Here it is the sky that offers relief and the artist does well to keep the horizon low and the cloudscapes high. It is the edges of the moor that most attracted the early painters, the wooded valleys where the fast flowing streams and rivers of Dartmoor wrestle their way over, under and between round-bellied boulders eager for the sea. This book, being almost exclusively about the artist-painter, abounds with such views.
