Thurs 16th October / Emily Buchanan
Share
Emily Buchanan’s debut novel Send Flowers is a blend of climate fiction and magical realism. It follows Fifi, an eco-influencer mourning the death of her boyfriend Ed—who unexpectedly returns as a talking houseplant. The story uses this surreal twist to explore grief, activism, and the emotional weight of trying to care in a world that’s falling apart.
Buchanan grew up in Broadstairs, Thanet, and her coastal upbringing clearly shapes the novel’s setting and tone. Before turning to fiction, she worked as a Creative Campaigner for Greenpeace, involved in efforts to stop fracking, protect the Arctic, and push for ocean conservation. That activist spirit runs deep in Send Flowers, which imagines a near-future Britain rocked by climate chaos and mass protest.
We look forward to talking about Send Flowers, and having a Q&A with Emily.
